San Diego food poisoning cases are nothing new. It can happen at any restaurant. But can you guess which type of food can churn a stomach the most?

The answer is chips and salsa.

A staple in many San Diego restaurants, chips and salsa – along with guacamole – are sometimes loaded with bacteria that can make you sick. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these types of appetizers are to blame in nearly one out of every 25 food-borne illnesses. Most cases between 1990 and 2008 were linked to food served in restaurants.

Blame the ingredients in salsa. Peppers, tomatoes, and cilantro have been linked to widespread salmonella outbreaks in recent years.

The CDC estimates more than 75 million Americans are sickened by food-borne illnesses each year. If you were sickened by food poisoning, would you know what to look for?

Common food poisoning symptoms include:

  • High fever (101.5 or higher)
  • Blood in the stools
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration
