Concussions are a very serious personal injury, especially for children involved in afternoon sports.
As local San Diego area high schools and colleges become more aware of concussions in children, some sporting programs are now requiring concussion baseline testing.
Concussion baseline testing happens in the pre-season and is conducted by trained San Diego area health care professionals. The tests are used to assess a child’s balance and brain function – including learning and memory skills, ability to pay attention or concentrate, and how quickly he or she thinks and solve problems. Baseline concussion tests also check for the presence of any concussion symptoms. Results from baseline tests can be used and compared to a similar exam conducted when an accident has resulted in a suspected concussion.
These types of tests are usually performed on children ages 10 years and older.
Concerns for concussions in children are so prevalent, national television news outlets are now shedding light on the topic… including this segment from CBS:
