A 7-year-old San Diego boy had part of his leg amputated Monday after being hit by a car in the Colina Del Sol neighborhood.

Police say the crash occurred just before 4:45 p.m. in the 4300 block of Altadena Avenue. The boy was hit, then dragged by an orange Honda Element after he ran into traffic. Witnesses say they saw the boy running from his house across the street.

“I saw him running toward me and the car hit him and dragged him. I heard a boom and he ran over him; over his leg and his ankle was hanging. His bone was broken,” said witness Melchor Portugal to 10News.

The boy was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital where doctors had to amputate his left leg below the knee.
