Police in Chula Vista, CA are cracking down on distracted drivers. On Saturday, 35 people were cited for distracted driving in the police department’s “Distracted Driving Operation.”

According to police, 29 drivers were cited for talking on handheld cellular phones while driving, and six were cited caught texting while driving. Each citation comes with a $159 fine.

The operation was part of an ongoing effort to improve traffic safety in Chula Vista.

Keep in mind that handheld cell phone use and texting are not the only distractions while driving. Eating, drinking, use of GPS, MP3 players and other devices are also considered distractions. Headphone use while driving is also restricted in California. The “ear buds epidemic” is extremely dangerous. “In 2017, 3166 people have been killed in crashes involving a distracted driver” – according to NHTSA. Drivers who wear headphones or ear buds in both ears often fail to yield to emergency vehicles, and most of all can’t hear the traffic around them – sometimes resulting in accidents.
