DUI Fatality Accident on Route 52 in Santee

Drunk driving is believed to be responsible for a deadly head-on car accident in Santee over the weekend. Police say a 30-year-old man – who is suspected of driving under the influence – drove the wrong way on state Route 52, causing a head-on crash.

The man identified as Matthew Leonardo was killed. Four people – including three children –  in the other vehicle were taken to the hospital with major injuries.

According to officials, Leonardo died at the scene and “had the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage about him.” Toxicology tests are underway to determine if Leonardo was, indeed, driving under the influence.

Police estimate both vehicles were traveling about 65-70 mph when they collided head-on.

An arrest and conviction for DUI drunk driving in California can mean serious consequences.
