An NBC News article reports that 228 million eggs are being recalled by Iowa-based Wright County Egg due to an outbreak of Salmonella. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that the eggs have been connected to several illnesses in California, Colorado, and Minnesota. At least 266 Californians and 7 in Minnesota have become ill after eating the contaminated eggs, state health officials report.

The tainted eggs were distributed throughout the U.S. and packaged under the names Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemp.

In amounting to four times the normal number of salmonella cases being reported, the CDC noted that approximately 200 cases of the strain of salmonella linked to the eggs were reported weekly during June and July. Some common symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 8 to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product. Salmonella poisoning is not to be taken lightly since it can be life-threatening, particularly for those who have weakened immune systems.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating the egg salmonella contamination by examining records and inspecting barns at the Iowa establishment.

While many of us do not expect the food we purchase and consume to cause any kind of illness, let alone salmonella poisoning, food manufacturers can be negligent in how they manage and package their products for sale and consumer use. A wide range of consumer products from food to automobiles to children’s toys can cause harm or worse, death, if a manufacturer overlooks or ignores protocol for creating safe and reliable products.
